Our story
First of all, I want to introduce myself. My name is Miriam Morarescu and I am 19 years old. I have two older siblings, a brother – Ruben, who is 22, and a sister – Andrada, who is 23.
As any young couple, my parents dreamed of having children and raising them in fear and knowledge of God, forming a happy and healthy family. But that dream didn’t happen exactly the way they would have wanted it, because God had a better plan for our family…
A few years after Ruben was born, when he was about 4 years old, my parents noticed that he had some problems with his walking, he would often trip and fall. So they decided to take him to a doctor for a check-up. After checking Ruben, and then Andrada and me, all three of us were diagnosed with a muscular dystrophy called Charcot-Marie-Tooth. The news was hard to take for my parents, but the Lord had been preparing them all along for this turn of things and with each new day He gave them strength through every step. Ruben had to start wearing braces to help him walk better because he was the most affected at that time. The years passed by and in 1999 we found a hospital for children in the USA which did bone-correction surgeries for free. So my mother, siblings and I flew to America to see what could be done to improve our health. We stayed there three years in which time Ruben had two surgeries at his legs. My father wasn’t able to get a visa so we only got to see him during the summer when we used to come back to Romania. The separation was difficult, but there was nothing we could do. The US doctors diagnosed us with dystal miopathy, and Ruben and I were given special braces for our legs to wear. Ruben also used a wheelchair often because he couldn’t walk far.
In 2002 we came back to Romania for good, because we couldn’t bare being separated from my father anymore. My health was quite well until that time, I could walk, play and do mostly everything a healthy child could do. Since then, my muscles started to become weaker and weaker until I could no longer walk, so my father had to carry me and I had to start using a wheelchair. It was quite hard for me going from being a normal child to being totally dependent on a wheelchair. My spine (and Ruben’s and Andrada’s) also started to deform, because the muscles on the right side of our body are stronger than the ones on the left.
But as the years passed I learned that the Lord has a special plan for each of us and that He is in control of every aspect of our life. I’m so glad and thankful to know that He is with me and with all of us, always.
My parents have always acted as though we are normal people and taught us to seek the Lord above all because from Him comes our strength to get through everything.
Today we don’t really know for sure what type of muscular dystrophy we suffer from because we don’t have all the symptoms of the one we were diagnosed with.
Our strengths and weaknesses differ. My sister Andrada is the least affected, she can walk and she seems just like a normal person for everyone who meets her but she has problems with her muscles as well. Ruben can also walk, but he only does it in the house, because he can walk short distances. He uses a a wheelchair when he goes outside, to college or other places. As for me, I’m dependent on a wheelchair and I have to wear a corset everytime I go to places in which I stay for hours because scoliosis sometimes tires my back. We live a normal life, I just finished high school this year and I’m going on to college where I will study Finance and Banking. Ruben is going in his third year of college and Andrada is in her last year of masters.
In my free time, I like to make handmade cards and also friendship bracelets with different patterns or writings (which my sister taught me to make). I like creating things with my hands. That’s why this summer, after finishing high school I decided I want to use my time to make handmade cards and bracelets (along with Andrada) and sell them on this website that Ruben made for us.
Lately I have been thinking of the posibility of having a scoliosis surgery as my spine is very deformed and it’s difficult for me to go on wearing a corset, because I get very tired often. Just before I finished high school a teacher advised me to contact a hospital from Jerusalem where she had been with a student who also had a surgery there and was very happy with the results of it. Since the hospital where we were treated in the US no longer treats patients from abroad for free, I decided to contact the one from Jerulasem which might be able to help me. The problem is that we(my family) will need help raising money in case the doctors from Jerusalem decide that I should have a spinal surgery. And in the future, my siblings will need one too. If you could help us with anything, I would be very grateful.
I hope you will enjoy visiting our website and if there’s anything you like out of our handmade creations, please let us know.
Thank you very much for visiting our website and God bless you!
P.S. (Miriam): Some time has passed since I wrote „Our story” and I have some news. I’ve been in contact with the hospital in Jerusalem and they have looked over my case, regarding my spine problems. I was advised to go there for a check-up (I have an appointment
on the 2nd of January 2012), so I’m going to go from the 2nd to the 10th of January. All the expenses for the check-up cost around 4.000 Euros (check-up + airplane tickets + accommodation). Based on what the doctors will say I will let you know when I come back what I’m going to do next (have a spinal surgery or not).
